Ronnie O'Sullivan - Only snooker player to give up 147 maximum break because of low prize money

Ronnie O'Sullivan is undeniably the greatest player of our generation and we're glad to witness all the greats that he has done for himself and the sport. There's no better player which comes to our mind when we think of snooker.

A 147 maximum break is highest possible achievement in a frame of snooker. A player compiles a 147 break by potting 15 reds and 15 blacks which accounts to 120 points followed by all the colors for 27 points. The 1st maximum break was compiled by Steve davis at a Classic in January 1982.

We've been playing snooker all our life and we know how difficult it is. But, It's a piece of cake for Ronnie O'Sullivan (The Rocket). Ronnie has compiled 15 maximum breaks in his snooker career and also holds the record of the fastest maximum which was for 5 minutes and 8 seconds.

There have been instances where O'Sullivan won our hearts by making a 146 break instead of 147 and for what? BECAUSE THE PRIZE MONEY WAS TOO LOW FOR AN ACHIEVEMENT LIKE A MAXIMUM. He asked the referee for the prize of a maximum and when he found out that it was too low, he chose to go the other way.

Following are the best 146 breaks by Ronnie which made the crowd sad and happy at the same time-

1) Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Ding Junhui - World Snooker Championship 2017

O'Sullivan made a thrilling 146 break, 3rd in crucible history. He took the pink for the 13th red where the 147 looked like a formality for O'Sullivan. He said - " I was playing on the black but didn't get on it. I don't take this stuff too seriously. I like to entertain, I like to put on a good show, I like to have fun and I like to enjoy myself"

2) Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Barry Pinches - Welsh Open

When Ronnie O'Sullivan got to know about the prize money for the maximum, he decided to make a point. The amount of 10000 pounds was apparently " too cheap " for a maxi and so scored a 146 instead. Opinions are divided as to if this was the right thing to do. Did he make his point? Yes. Is it the most controversial break in snooker history? Probably! Will anyone or rather can anybody have done something like this? NO.
